Liverpool, England, sends greetings

By FRED MILLER (fmiller@reviewonline.com)

EAST LIVERPOOL — The mayor of East Liverpool has received season’s greetings and best wishes for the New Year from the Lord Mayor, Councillor Joan Lang of Liverpool, England, along an invitation to join in celebrating that city’s 800th birthday.

Lang said in her letter to James Swoger that “we ask you to provide the City of Liverpool with a birthday greeting. The greeting can come in any format — card, letter — or on a DVD or other new media. Our intention is to display greetings during the year from all our fellow Liverpools, partner cities and world leaders.”

She said Liverpool plans to mark the actual birthday on Aug. 28, 2007, with a major celebration.

“You may wish to organize something on that day, too, and maybe connect with us in some way,” her letter stated. She invited officers of this city to contact Neil Peterson or Barbara King of Liverpool’s international relations team to discuss details.

“We plan many celebratory activities during the year, and we would very much like the other Liverpools throughout the world to join us in those celebrations,” Lang wrote.

She said Liverpool, England, will be celebrating throughout 2008 as well for a separate purpose. It has been designated “European Capital of Culture” for 2008.

She concluded her letter with, “Please convey our best wishes, and those of the City of Liverpool, to the Citizens of East Liverpool, Ohio, USA.” Councillor Warren Bradley, leader of the Liverpool City Council, co-signed the letter.

Mayor Swoger said he very much appreciated the communication from East Liverpool’s sister city, and welcomes suggestions for appropriate ways in which to respond to the requests.

East Liverpool recently was visited twice by an unofficial visitor from Liverpool, England: auto body mechanic Phil Bimpson. Bimpson took it upon himself to identify and visit every other city or town in the world named Liverpool.

Bimpson visited and videotaped people and locales at Liverpools in Nova Scotia, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Texas. He was in East Liverpool for a week in October and returned for three days in November. Bimpson returned to his home city, from which he will journey in February to the last remaining unvisited Liverpool in Australia, a large city of 120,000 people.

He said he will offer the images and information gathered on his one-man odyssey - including the history and stories he found in East Liverpool - as part of Liverpool’s 800th anniversary
